15:00 to 17:00 - Isafjordsgatan 39, Kista

Presenter: Dr. Laura Hosman, Illinois Institute of Technology, Spider Board member. SPIDER is the Swedish Program for ICT in Developing Regions

Even technologies that look and sound great for the developing world, when actually put to the test under resource-constrained conditions, frequently fail to catch on, or achieve the higher goal of bringing about development. Many of the reasons for this have far more to do with the human, social, and political realities in emerging regions than with the technologies themselves. This talk draws from Professor Hosman's in-the-field experience with such challenges, and discusses lessons learned and ways to move forward.
Dr. Laura Hosman's work focuses on two main areas: Public-Private Partnerships and ICT-in-education, both with a focus on the developing world. Her current research focuses on the role for information and communications technology (ICT) in developing countries, particularly in terms of its potential effects on socio-cultural factors, human development, and economic growth.
Dr. Hosman is Assistant Professor of Political Science and Associate Chair in the Department of Social Sciences at Illinois Institute of Technology. Prior to IIT, Dr. Hosman held postdoctoral research fellow positions at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Southern California.
Webcast: The seminar is open to all participants and will be webcast on www.spidercenter.org
